Caring for Your Antique Jewelry: 3 Tips

One topic I have talked a lot about to our customers recently is how to properly care for antique jewelry. These precious heirlooms carry not only monetary value but also sentimental significance as they are often passed down through generations. We’ve seen a recent growing interest in these pieces and because the jewelry is sometimes so old, there may be issues with the piece that need repairing so it’s essential to approach these repairs and regular maintenance with a deep understanding and respect for their history and craftsmanship.

Here are some tips to help you preserve your antique jewelry.

Proper Storage

Antique jewelry can be more delicate than contemporary pieces. It’s important to always handle your jewelry with clean, dry hands to prevent oils and dirt from transferring to the metal or stones.  Items should be stored in a safe and secure space. They should be separated so they don’t scratch each other. Jewelry should also not be worn in pools, at gyms, in showers, or when you go to bed.  Wearing them in these places may cause loss or damage and will shorten the life span of your jewelry.

Regular Cleaning

Cleaning antique jewelry requires a gentle touch. We would strongly suggest bringing your jewelry to DW Gem Services and letting us inspect the items before we clean them. If you do want to clean your jewelry at home, a soft toothbrush with warm soapy water can do a gentle cleaning. You should not use any harsh chemicals that can damage delicate settings and stones. Ultrasonic cleaners and steamers are generally not recommended for antique pieces, as they can cause damage.

Professional Inspections

Regular professional inspections are crucial. Over time, stones can become loose, and metal can wear thin. We specialize in antique jewelry and can identify potential issues before they become major problems.  We see many pieces that come into us that were poorly repaired by jewelers who lack the expertise on how to repair this kind of jewelry.  If your jewelry does require repair, inexperienced jewelers may inadvertently damage your precious pieces. Proper restoration requires knowledge of historical techniques and materials to maintain the piece’s integrity and value. DW Gem Services has this experience and expertise.

Caring for your antique jewelry ensures that these cherished pieces can be enjoyed for generations to come. By taking the time to handle, clean, and store your jewelry properly, and by seeking expert repairs when necessary, you can preserve the beauty and history of your antique treasures.
