Custom jewelry design offers a unique opportunity to infuse personal significance into stunning pieces. By integrating meaningful elements such as birthstones, engravings, and repurposed family jewels, clients can create one-of-a-kind designs that tell their stories and celebrate their milestones.
Birthstones: A Touch of Personal History
Incorporating birthstones into custom jewelry is one of the timeless ways to add personal meaning. Each gemstone carries unique symbolism and significance, often associated with specific traits or attributes. For example, garnet, the January birthstone, symbolizes protection and strength, while sapphire, for September, represents wisdom and serenity. By choosing birthstones for rings, necklaces, or bracelets, clients can create pieces that celebrate their birth month, commemorate a loved one, or mark a significant event in their lives.
Engravings: Words that Last a Lifetime
Engravings can also add an intimate touch to custom jewelry. Whether it’s a meaningful quote, a special date, or the initials of a loved one, engravings make each piece unique. These inscriptions can be discreetly placed inside a ring band, on the back of a pendant, or along the edges of a bracelet, ensuring that the message remains personal and close to the wearer’s heart. Engravings transform a beautiful piece of jewelry into a cherished heirloom that can be passed down through generations.
Repurposed Family Jewels: A New Life for Treasured Items
One area where we specialize and have really seen a lot of interest lately is the repurposing of family jewels. This is one of the most heartfelt ways to create custom jewelry. Transforming old engagement rings, wedding rings, or colored stone rings into new designs allows clients to honor their heritage while creating something modern and wearable. Recently, I had the pleasure of completing eight custom design projects where I helped clients breathe new life into their heirloom pieces.
Here’s a look at some of those beautiful designs:
This client had another jeweler create a setting with 10 different-sized diamonds. This resulted in a ring with no symmetry and really no style. We asked her for some ideas of what she was looking for and she preferred a band style with a single row of stones. We created the style with a small band of gold between each diamond.
This client had an engagement ring and wedding band that belonged to her mother. She wanted a 6mm blue zircon (her birthstone) as a center stone. We created this beautiful platinum ring with her diamonds set symmetrically.
This client was getting engaged. He wanted a blue sapphire or other blue stone for a center stone. He also wanted to use diamonds from his girlfriend’s grandmother’s diamond wrap ring for sentimental reasons. We found this beautiful teal blue lab-grown diamond and created this ring with her grandmother’s baguette cut diamonds on the side and round brilliant cut natural diamonds micro pave set on the shank.
This is a ring we designed because our client liked the antique look but all the antique rings she found were badly worn or badly repaired and would not hold up to everyday wear. I told her we could create the same look but it would be something she would not need to worry about losing diamonds or wearing out. This ring was created in platinum with a beautiful tulip design on the shoulders and milgrain edging holding a 2.25 ct natural diamond.
